Social Emotional Learning for School-Age

If you are employed in a state that uses a registry to track professional development hours, you will be able to provide your registry ID (Stars, MOPID, Registry or other ECE ID#) after you have completed the quiz for the course. If you pass the quiz we will report your course completion to the state registry using the registry ID that you provide.

Explore the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) in supporting school-age children’s development, relationships, behavior, and academic success. Designed for early childhood educators and childcare professionals, this course examines self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Participants will explore practical strategies and activities for intentionally teaching these skills in everyday classroom experiences. Apply these strategies to strengthen children’s problem-solving, empathy, impulse control, and self-regulation while creating a positive and supportive learning environment. Course length – 2.0 hours.

This course will help answer the following questions:

• What is social-emotional learning?

• Why is SEL important in teaching?

• How can I teach self-awareness?

• How can I teach self-management?

• How can I teach social awareness?

• How can I teach relationship skills?

• How can I teach responsible decision-making?

Participants who successfully complete this course will be able to:

• Identify at least three strategies that support children’s self-awareness and self-management with 80% accuracy on the course assessment.

• Select at least three strategies that strengthen children’s social awareness and relationship skills during classroom scenarios.

• Develop a developmentally appropriate activity that teaches children responsible decision-making and includes at least two opportunities for practice.
