Milestones: Observations and Assessments
If you are employed in a state that uses a registry to track professional development hours, you will be able to provide your registry ID (Stars, MOPID, Registry or other ECE ID#) after you have completed the quiz for the course. If you pass the quiz we will report your course completion to the state registry using the registry ID that you provide.
Understand child development milestones, screening tools, and assessment practices from birth through age five. Designed for early childhood professionals, this self-paced course explores the importance of developmental screenings, assessment methods, interpreting results, and appropriate follow-up strategies. Participants will be introduced to tools such as Ages and Stages and Brigance while learning how to monitor children’s progress, recognize potential concerns, and support children who may need additional resources or services. Course length – 3.0 hours.

Why is it important that I perform accurate and timely screenings of the children in my care?

How are the results of screenings utilized when developing curriculum and lesson plans?

How do we follow up with parents with the results of screenings?

Is there such a thing as “normal” for reaching milestones?

What are the milestones for MY age group?

What should I do if a child isn’t reaching milestones?
Participants who successfully complete this course will be able to:

Identify at least three ways observations and assessments support children’s learning and development with 80% accuracy on the course assessment.

Complete an objective observation that includes factual, specific, and developmentally relevant information.

Use assessment results to develop at least two appropriate follow-up activities or support strategies for a child.

Identify the typical progression of developmental milestones from birth through age five across the major developmental areas.
