New to Home Childcare?

If you are employed in a state that uses a registry to track professional development hours, you will be able to provide your registry ID (Stars, MOPID, Registry or other ECE ID#) after you have completed the quiz for the course. If you pass the quiz we will report your course completion to the state registry using the registry ID that you provide.

Prepare to start or strengthen a home childcare program by understanding the responsibilities involved in operating childcare in your home. Designed for individuals considering opening a home childcare program or those who have recently started one, this course explores licensing requirements, necessary materials, paperwork, use of space, choosing appropriate enrollments, and handling challenging situations such as terminating care. Participants will engage with practical examples and reflection questions to build confidence and make informed decisions while creating a safe, organized, and successful home childcare program. Course length – 2.0 hours.

This course will help answer the following questions:

• Do I need to be licensed?

• What materials do I need?

• What kind of paperwork will I need?

• How much of my home should be available?

• How do I decide which children to accept?

• What if I need to terminate a child?

Participants who successfully complete this course will be able to:

• Locate the rules and requirements for operating a home childcare program.

• Use professional boundaries and family interview strategies to support successful enrollment.

• Describe appropriate procedures for ending care when a placement is no longer a good fit.
