The Magic of Storytelling

If you are employed in a state that uses a registry to track professional development hours, you will be able to provide your registry ID (Stars, MOPID, Registry or other ECE ID#) after you have completed the quiz for the course. If you pass the quiz we will report your course completion to the state registry using the registry ID that you provide.

Discover how storytelling can become a powerful teaching strategy in early childhood education. Designed for early childhood professionals, this online, self-paced course explores how stories support literacy, language, math, sequencing, science, social studies, social-emotional learning, and cultural diversity. Through engaging lessons and practical examples, participants will learn how to intentionally use storytelling to create meaningful learning experiences that strengthen children’s development, creativity, communication, and understanding of the world around them. Course length – 3.0 hours.

This course helps answer the following questions.

• How can storytelling help teach literacy and language?

• How can storytelling help teach cultural diversity and inclusion?

• How can storytelling help teach math and sequencing?

• How can storytelling help teach SEL skills?

• How can storytelling help teach science and social studies?

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Identify at least five ways storytelling supports literacy and language development in young children with 100% accuracy on a course assessment.

• Explain how storytelling promotes cultural diversity, inclusion, and respect by describing three strategies that encourage children to appreciate different backgrounds.

• Demonstrate how storytelling can be used to teach math concepts and sequencing by developing two age-appropriate storytelling activities.

• Recognize at least four ways storytelling supports children’s social-emotional development, including emotional awareness, empathy, and problem-solving.

• Create a lesson plan that integrates storytelling into either science or social studies and includes three developmentally appropriate learning objectives.
